College plans $37.5M building along Medical Mile

November 9, 2016

A local college’s board has given the green light for a new $37.5-million health professions building along the Medical Mile.

Grand Valley State University said last week its board approved funding for an 84,000-square-foot building and a $9 million, two-level parking garage in Grand Rapids’ Belknap Lookout neighborhood, at 500 Lafayette Ave. NE.

The building will be five stories and include four classrooms, 15 teaching laboratories, a computer lab and 90 faculty and staff offices to extend the capacity of the university’s College of Health Professions and Kirkhof College of Nursing.

The facility also will house spaces for student study and student organizations, as well as workrooms and break rooms.

It will be called 500 Lafayette after its street address.

Construction is expected to begin in December and be completed in May 2018.

Increasing health programs

James Moyer, GVSU associate VP for facilities planning, said the university needs the building, because of its continued growth in the health sciences and nursing fields during the past 10 years.

“The new building…provides the potential to offer more and unique programs and increase capacity in current ones,” he said. “It also provides us the potential to expand the simulation center.”

Moyer said the college chose the Belknap Lookout neighborhood after “land was made available to the university by parties who had consolidated their holdings.”

Funding

The building and the site's parking garage will be funded by donor support, university-issued bonds and campus development funds.

Firms on the project

Grand Rapids-based Fishbeck, Thompson, Carr & Huber is the project’s architect.

Grand Rapids-based Rockford Construction is the project’s contractor.
